2011 Block of the Month~Underground Railroad

As we reflect on the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War of the United States, we can also reflect on the history of quilts in the Underground Railroad.

Your Block of the Month will include Barbara Brackman's Facts & Fabrications, Unraveling the History of Quilts & Slavery as your guide through history & these blocks.

The awesome part with this block of the month is that you can customize your quilt by choosing your sashing, cornerstone & binding fabrics from any of our inventory.  We recommend staying period relevant and choosing a fabric from our 1800's section, or a solid.

Cleaning Surprises

 

 

I spent Sunday organizing my home sewing studio and found all three rag purse kits already cut.  I thought that stitching them up was kind of like using scraps, since I don’t even remember how long ago they were cut. (except for the bottom bag)

 

 

 

So  the top set would make a nice mommy & me set I think.

It’s not my NCAA school, but I am in Vol Country

This purse is a custom order for Christmas.  I will be listing this Robert Kaufman fabric very soon.  I have been on a sewing binge lately & have much to add when I put my IT hat back on!

Reason for the Season

Well, I lost track of time & didn’t get my blog post done in time to celebrate the 12 days of Christmas as I had hoped.  I did want to share with you the symbolism of the song, in the event you hadn’t seen it before, or wanted to reflect on it again.

 

Religious symbolism of The Twelve Days of Christmas

1 True Love refers to God
2 Turtle Doves refers to the Old and New Testaments
3 French Hens refers to Faith, Hope and Charity, the Theological Virtues
4 Calling Birds refers to the Four Gospels and/or the Four Evangelists
5 Golden Rings refers to the first Five Books of the Old Testament, the "Pentateuch", which gives the history of man's fall from grace.
6 Geese A-laying refers to the six days of creation
7 Swans A-swimming refers to the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, the sacraments
8 Maids A-milking refers to the eight beatitudes
9 Ladies Dancing refers to the nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit
10 Lords A-leaping refers to the ten commandments
11 Pipers Piping refers to the eleven faithful apostles

Bubbles wants to see some friends

I came in this morning to find Bubbles hanging out with the quilting elf & Santa in the tree.  I guess he’s lonely.

Winter Wonderland

Us Southerner’s go a little crazy when we see snow.



Our biggest snow in recent memory and howling winds making nice drifts everywhere


This morning I started shoveling the lot, since we won’t be above freezing most of the week (and I have to be ready for any UPS deliveries of fabric, right?).    So, I thought I would go another round with the shovel & it’s snowing like crazy again



At least I have a running start at it!

We are here for any phone & web store help, but we hope our local customers are staying home & working on those few last minute quilting gifts. 

We hope to reopen tomorrow, though will shoot for a little later open, around 10am

What fun!

Today we were blessed to be a stop on the Quilt Trail Bus Trip organized by the Upper Cumberland Quilt Trail.

It was great to see so many familiar faces from the regional quilt shows I attend and have them see me (wink).

If you look real close in the pic above, you can see a sneak peek of the 2011 Block of the Month, our tribute to the history of the Underground Railroad (top left corner on the wall)

With our sconce lighting, taking pictures inside our store is a challenge, to say the least, so please forgive the grainy/dark exposure.

So a big, huge THANK YOU to all of you for coming on the trail ride & to the UCQT for organizing this event!
