New Shop Display for panels

The week before Christmas it hit me to re-merchandise all my panels.  So I just dropped my current project to “finish it in a day or so.”

Fast forward to a  week later….

It’s still a work in process but I think my hunch was right!  If you can’t see the fabric, you can’t love the fabric!  Panels are so hard to see when wrapped on the bolt…so we got them off the bolt & where you can actually see them.

I totally understimated the number of panels I had on hand.  I still have more to “bag & tag” but I really like this.  I need to score a couple more unloved metal ironing boards.  They make awesome pegboards!  (think how many rulers you could organize!)

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but you still need to pop in & see this one for yourself!

Primary Pinwheel Quilt

I am really loving these pinwheels!  Don’t they just feel happy?

This is #2 out of 3 pinwheel quilts from my scraps.  Just like the last one, I had to supplement the scraps for setting & borders, but I can live with that.

scrappy baby pinwheels

Is this too flowery to be used for a baby boy quilt?  What do you think?

Measures 57x57

Used this red micro dot for the 1st border & this Aunt Grace fabric.

Great table topper or lap quilt size…or for a baby ????

I am linking up with Sarah; go see what others have been up to this week!

Scrappy Pinwheel Quilt Top

It’s been another whirl-wind week, hasn’t it?  I escaped for the guild’s Christmas party-a cookie party at that-on Monday.  So nice to just hang out for an hour or so.  But then the gotta-get-busy-guilt hit & away I rushed.

But with the rushing comes some finishes & time for pondering the next finishes on my horizon.

I was able to finish up the other half of my Orca Bay string blocks yesterday; that feels good.  It’s amazing how much scraps you can burn through with those oh so fun (and oh so forgiving) strings!

I am wrapping up my scrap busting fall with 3 quilts from my stack-o-pinwheels

Here’s the first one in flimsy form:

scrappy pinwheels

I am going to send this to the long-armer as soon as my Warm & White batting comes in.  That gives me time to decide on/piece a scrappy backing & get the binding made too.  The pinwheels are all scraps, but the setting is off the bolt.  That’s always the way…to use the scraps you have to dig into new fabric.  But it feels good to empty that bin of 3.5” half square triangles.

My other 2 pinwheel quilts will be more themed.  I let this one take the “leftovers” from the other 2 quilts, but I really like it.  Reminds me of antique scrappy quilts.  There are pigs, horses, flags, flowers, bees, race cars, and even some Sugar Pop in there.

Next up for me is to plan the first quarter of class calendars.  Thinking cap time…

Orca Bay Progress-Part 4

Last week was a week to focus on quilting projects instead of piecing for me, but I was able to get almost half of step 4 and all of step 3 finished!  Huge accomplishment for me to give myself this much ME time with looming deadlines, but I did it!

DSCN4829

So if you are keeping up with my Orca Bay, you’ll see that I am using purple for Bonnie’s blue, blue for the black & pink for the red.  I am trying to keep the colors bright, though the purple has gravitated dark.

I hope to squeeze the rest of the pink string blocks in today or tomorrow.  Then I am only “behind” for step 1…until Friday anyway.

I’m linking up with Bonnie’s linky party…go see how everyone else is coming along…

Are you part of Hexi-mania?

Hexagons have really surged this year.  All over the net you see folks discussing their hexi projects.  Have you resisted thinking it’s just too much hand work?

Well, this is the kit for you!

hexi TR kit

A nice sized (15x35”) table runner, all matched up in beautiful 30’s fabrics from Robert Kaufman’s Clothesline Club.  All designed by Darlene Zimmerman, so you know they are spot on matches to the grandmother’s flower garden quilts of old.

The kit contains the fabrics for the runner top & binding.

Great gift idea too!  Pair it with the Hexi ruler, also by Darlene Zimmerman, and you have a great gift for your Quilting Secret Sister, or best bud.

Orca Bay Progress

Yes, I am still woefully behind those who are keeping up with the Orca Bay Mystery, but I decided that I wanted to play, not race when I started.  So each Friday, I save the clues, think about the fabric I’ll use for that part of the challenge & maybe get it cut.

This Sunday, I actually stitched!  Since I adore string blocks, I skipped right to them.  I finished 60 out of the 72 I need.  I would have finished, but the Packers were on, and hey, a girl has to have priorities!  Update:  I finished off the blocks this morning.  woohoo!

Here’s a sample of my strings

DSCN4814

I broke down & ordered the 1.5” triangle die for my GO too, so step 3 is on hold at least until it comes in.

At least I feel like I am playing along in the mystery now with some finished blocks!

Quilts, Table Runners & pieces, Oh my!

I enjoyed my long Thanksgiving weekend by finishing up some projects!

Finally some quilting going on in the quilt shop this week though it was out of necessity; I ran out of basting pins.  I had 2 choices; open more or quilt the projects already basted.  I decided to buckle down & quilt instead of take the easy way out.

I made this top over the summer.  Very quick & easy fat quarter pattern, Happy Daze.  I used fabrics from Buttercup Lane.  I finally basted it a month ago when I  basted this quilt.  The scrap batting was the perfect size, so I put it to immediate use….just not immediate quilting.  (and no, that other quilt isn’t quilted yet.)

HappyDazehappydaze1

In my quest to use up what’s laying around, I made these 2 table runners from leftover Mary Engelbreit turnover pieces.  The backing & batting are also cast-offs from other projects, so these were very good for scrap management.

me1me2me3me4

I finished piecing my commissioned tumbler quilt top.  It will become a new backing to an old quilt.  The pic shows it just resting on top of the scalloped edge top.  Last night I started removing the old binding, which will just be replaced with the red marble used in the tumblers.

DSCN4802

While piecing the tumblers & the 2012 BOM top (big reveal very soon), I worked in pinwheel piecing.  I have over 100 done.  more to go, all scraps, even the white!

pinwheels

So, that’s my update for the week (actually 2, I didn’t update you last week).  What did you work on?  I’m linking up with Sarah; pop over there & see what folks have been up to & give them a little Whoop Whoop of encouragement!

Orca Bay Mystery at Quiltville

I am finally starting to make some progress on my Quiltville Orca Bay quilt.  No, it’s not much, but pieces being cut is a definite commitment to the project!  (Check back tomorrow to see what has been keeping me so busy this week & last!)

I decided to use up a big piece of scrap for my Step 1 .  My neutral color is also going to be mostly natural muslin, because I have so many scraps.  So my step 1 is not going to be very scrappy, a little, but not much.  I am hoping this works out ok.

orcabay1

My step 2, however, will be pretty scrappy.  I was glad to have the GO! cutter to cut my foundation squares.  3 turns of the crank & that bit was finished!  I have my purple strips all pressed & at the ready.

orcabay2

So there is my progress on the first 2 steps of the mystery…and eeek, the next clue comes out tomorrow!

It’s not to late to play along!  Pop over to Bonnie Hunter’s blog (click here) and print the directions.  You won’t be that far behind me!  Besides this is a project for you to use up your scraps.  Is there ever a deadline for that?
