Smithsonian Way We Worked comes to Jamestown

Tomorrow is the big kick off for the month-long exhibit in Jamestown, The Way We Worked, a travelling exhibit of the Smithsonian Institute.  The Sergeant York Patriotic Foundation and our local Historical Society worked very hard to bring this exhibit to our community.

In conjunction with the main exhibit at Progressive Savings Bank, a dozen Chamber of Commerce businesses have volunteered to set up additional companion exhibits for a driving tour.

Here are a few snapshots of the exhibit we have put together in our classroom for the driving tour:

We hope that if you are in the area, you will drop into the bank & supporting businesses to check out this exhibit.

The ribbon cutting ceremony is 1pm at the bank on Saturday.  I also believe that Mrs. Patsy Littrell will be hosting an antique quilt bed turning during the afternoon hours at the bank.  Patsy’s bed turnings are unique, in that she tells the story of the quilter, not just the quilt!

See you soon!

I am linking up with Sarah, cuz this took 2 days to do & anything that makes me clean my room deserves a whoop whoop!

Antique quilt blocks-just hanging around waiting their turn

Sarah over at Confessions of a Fabric Addict  {who is a most amazing woman} recently auctioned off 30 beautiful antique blocks to benefit her church’s quilt ministry.

I must admit, from the second I saw them, they were a must have.  Her pictures were wonderful, but it is hard to do these awesome blocks justice over the internet.  Seeing is swooning!

This block is one of the 2 with the stamp from the sugar sack still visible.  Note the size of these “blades” compared to the flat head pin(!!!).  The blocks are hand pieced and instead of appliqueing, the background is pieced in quarters (love this idea).  The center yellow is appliqued.

Since these blocks have never been used, the fabrics are in amazing condition.

I went through my new bundle of goodness with my friend, Patsy, who also loves old quilts as much (or more) as new ones.  She made a good point that these blocks deserve to be set by hand & hand quilted.  Yeah, good point, but I am still hand quilting a project I started 3 years ago {if you can call it that…I look at it more than work at it}.

So these beautiful blocks have been fondled in the shop for the past week by everyone.  I needed to decide what to do with them.  So, for now, I put them on display.  Each is safety pinned to a wrapped clothesline.  Makes a cute curtain, right?

It wraps around the corner too.  (forgot to turn off the sconce light, so the pic is grainy-oops)

When I do get them down to play with them, my ceiling will look naked….so now there’s another thing on THE LIST!

Great Scrap Quilt! Maddie Bea using Sweet N Sassy Ruler Set

When I first saw this quilt pattern, my mind went straight to my big pile of Civil War scraps from the 2011 BOM & circle quilt.   The pattern uses 2” strips, so it’s perfect for using up those pesky scraps.  I think this quilt would be really cute in fun, bright & bold juvenile prints too.

The pattern is for a twin, but easy to expand by just adding more to each row.  I did make my borders a tad bigger than the pattern for a nice drop.  I think I will drop this off at Helen-Marie’s when I head home from the Sparta Quilt Show in a few weeks.  I will have the flimsey there so you can see it in person!

This quilt uses the Sweet N Sassy ruler set by Creative Grids and the Maddie Bea pattern

Finding charm-new displays!

A quick trip to the bank for change this morning became an outing of serendipity!  I have been anguishing over displaying our monthly Snap Sacks in the best way in the shop.  I needed a bookcase & I needed not to spend a king’s ransom.

Driving through town, I see Shanantha (love her name!) putting out the displays at the recently opened Red Barn Bargains on Main.  A big light went off!  On my way back to the shop, I snagged these awesome antique iron planters (and the cutie patootie lil dress form).

Using these for my precut yards & remnants, I can use the bookcase I already have for the Snap Sacks!

the bookcase is to the left of the main counter, so I just pinned the displays across the front of the counter.  Kinda grabs you as you walk in, huh?

It’s funny how 2 little iron planters have created a whole day of {fun} rearranging!
