Quilt Finishes!

June was a great month to dive into the scrap bins & UFO’s and see what we could get done.

My Jacob’s Ladder queen size quilt (see more here) is now finished!

All scraps except my purple & yellow half square triangles which are Whimsey Doosie, this Michael Miller print.  Simple quilting really lets the pattern do the talking, I think.  I bound it in a scrappy binding just to finish off the effect.  The backing is a great Thimbleberries backing.

I dove back into the scraps on the 4th of July & decided a Log Cabin was in order.  I find these blocks addicting.  Can’t put them down.  In a week, I had 56 blocks, all squared up, 12.5”.  Once that was done, I was able to walk away.  I played with layout & decided the traditional diamond was how I would play it.

Then, as my UFO finishing luck would have it, a friend was in the shop looking for fabric to make a gentleman a quilt in a hurry.  She works with a local church group making Prayers & Squares (that rhymes in the south ) quilts.  I finished my UFO by giving her my blocks.  Wow, that was an easy finish!  I enjoy the block making best anyway!

How to get more out of your Facebook time

Did you know that you only see about 15% of your fan'd page posts?  It's a way for Facebook to get ad revenue from those with fan pages.  If we pay to promote, we will be seen by more of our fans/likers.

BUT, you can fix that!    You can create your own news feed via “Lists”

First, start on a page you “like”, like, um, I don’t know, Fabrics N Quilts

Click on the little gear button next to the Like button & select Add to Interest Lists

Assuming you don’t have an interest list set up, click New List

Click Next

Name your list (I called mine Quilting) & decide who can see it.  Click Done

Now, you can add to your list in the upper right corner by simply typing in names of people or pages AND your list shows in the list on the left. (See at the bottom where Quilting is highlighted?)

Now, Go forth & make lists…just don’t forget to add us (www.facebook.com/www.fabricsnquilts)

Using the GO! cutter for a bright summer wall hanging

Universal Digitizing has several CD collections that will make your GO! applique a breeze.  Each collection contains all the major embroidery machine formats for a selection of GO! dies. 

We used the two above for our wall hanging

We dug into our scrap bin for this entire project.  The background & the backing were trimmings from backings of other projects.  Even the binding (a cute pansy print) was in the scrap bin.

Since I was going semi free form, I GO! cut my pieces, no fusible, and laid them out on the background.  I played with the layout until I was happy & then used a wash out marker & lightly traced where pieces should fall.  Now I am no pro at the embroidery machine, so I KNEW that there was no way that I could “hit my mark”.  I started on the left & worked my way right, getting as close as I could to my original mark.  To keep the pieces from twitching or shifting, I used a glue stick. 

The embroidery design first stitches an outline for the piece.  I then put the glue inside the outline & stuck my applique shape in place.  Then the design does a running stitch to stitch the applique in place before it stitches the final decorative stitch you select.  There are 5 or 6 different decorative stitch designs for each shape.

I added my free form grass & appliqued that in place.  I finished off the piece with free motion quilting in the background (aurifil 50wt), on the butterflies and in the grass & leaves (YLI Fusions 30wt).

This was a fun, just for me, all from scraps quick project.  I am glad to say, the desire to applique is not as scary as it was a few months ago.  I owe that all to my friend, Eileen.

Fresh Cut July Snap Sack & giveaway

Summer blooms are in full swing in Tennessee! We thought this was the perfect month for our Fresh Cut Snap Sack kit to be unveiled!

These flowers, like the Sunflower kit from May, are 3D & jump right off the quilt.  You could use beads or buttons to really embellish this quilt into a fun & lively bright spot in your home.  Since we need to show what’s in the kit, we just free motioned the flower centers to quilt them in place.  The flowers (and leaves) are 2 sided, so we wanted flippy floppy petals. 

We used several colors of our favorite 40 wt. Aurifil thread to quilt our wall hanging.  We can’t wait to see how you finish yours!
