Most of the blocks will go into a sampler of some sort.  I still have to finish the hand embroidery (bottom left).  The turtle has become a pillow to welcome a new baby to their nursery.  And the bunnies (above the turtle) into a wall hanging for a bunny loving friend.
The most beloved block has been the appliqued hearts (by far!).  Here’s the lowdown on the blocks:

Scrap Quilt Challenge-Sponsor Spotlight-Creative Grids Rulers

Do you look at the brand of your rulers?  If you have used any of the Creative Grids rulers, I bet you have.  Creative Grids are only available through independent shops, like your Local Quilt Shop & favorite online quilt shop.  This means you will have a partner to help you learn how to use your specialty ruler.  The staff at your LQS are there to help you be the quilter you want to become.  I hope each of you have a partnership with an LQS, but we know it’s not always possible.  Especially if your town doesn’t have one!

What makes Creative Grids so special?  Not only do they partner with independent designers to produce rulers (Go Indie!), the rulers are easy to read & come with built in grips so your rulers won’t slide around on your fabric. Since the rulers are made as a partnership with indie designers, they usually, but, unfortunately, don’t always come with instructions on how to use them.  Again, the partnership with your LQS will help guide you.

In the event you haven’t tried one of the MANY Creative Grids rulers, Creative Grids and Checker Distributors are giving away  “Scrap Crazy 6” ruler sets to TWO of our lucky Scrap Quilt Challenge winners!   Create 6" finished blocks with the four templates in this set. All of the pieces can be cut from those odd sized scraps in your stash or stack fabrics and cut multiples in a matter of minutes. The tips are trimmed when needed so the pieces sew together perfectly every time. Then, embellish the seams with your favorite decorative stitches and threads. Make an entire quilt or sew them into a scrappy, decorative border.

Speaking of the Scrap Quilt Challenge….we are just a couple days away from the deadline!  I hope you are busy binding or taking your pictures!

Remember, entering is EASY!

  • 45” x 60” minimum size

  • Entries must be completed quilts (patchwork, applique, rag quilt are all fine.  It just must be a completed project)

  • Entries should have been completed in the last year (since last year’s challenge ended on October 15, 2013)

then upload a picture:

Quilt pictures must be uploaded to our Flickr group by October 15, 2014

If you’ve missed any of our sponsor spotlights, check out the kickoff post to see details on all 20 prizes!

Scrap Quilt Challenge Sponsor Spotlight-Lavender Lime

Kathy Skomp, the design wiz behind Lavender Lime is also the nicest woman you may ever have the chance to meet.    Kathy is giving away a prize pack of 3 patterns to one lucky random Scrap Quilt Challenge winner, including the uber popular Merry Meets Modern.

If you want to see Merry Meets Modern a more detail, check out this YouTube video Kathy made for Moda during a recent Quilt Market.

Her patterns are so well written, you may feel like she is right there with you as you sew! You may remember my Tie the Knot quilt, a Lavender Lime design, I finished earlier this year. Still one of my faves!

Check out her Facebook page too!

Scrap Quilt Challenge-Button Block Tutorial-Scrap Therapy

Here we are, the last Scrap Quilt Challenge block tutorial!  It’s been a great summer of scrap quilting!  If you missed our other block tutorials, just click on the designer’s name to pop over to their blog & check them out: Anne Weins, Nancy Mahoney, Mishka’s Playground.

Joan Ford from Hummingbird Highway & Scrap Therapy has designed this month’s button block.  This 6 inch block just makes me happy.  The circle quilting makes the button look like it’s smiling!  I want a whole quilt with these scrappy cuties!  When you pop over to check out the tutorial, be sure you sign up for Joan’s newsletter.  Lots of great info & news every week.

Of course, as we look at this happy last tutorial, we hear that deadline bell ringing a bit louder.

The Scrap Quilt Challenge deadline is just

2 weeks away

It’s time to get the quilting wrapped up & get your scrappy beauty bound.  Then, of course, it’s photo op time.

The Scrap Quilt Challenge is easy…really!  Don’t read more into the rules than is there.  This is your quilt, your scraps, your creativity.  We are not judging entries, or awarding prizes based on design.

Upload your pic in time, abide by our easy 3 rules, and you are qualified.  Yes, we are working on the honor system with our rules.  Though those who don’t play by the rules taint the fun, we are just going to let Karma catch up with them.  Life’s too short for me or you to spend our energy on policing entries.

  • 45” x 60” minimum size

  • Entries must be completed quilts (patchwork, applique, rag quilt are all fine.  It just must be a completed project)

  • Entries should have been completed in the last year (since last year’s challenge ended on October 15, 2013)

Upload your qualifying quilt to our flickr group by end of the day on October 15, 2014:

Won’t have your quilt finished?  That’s ok.  There is always next year!  The rules won’t change.  Since you obviously love scrap quilts, go take a look at the over 70 pictures already uploaded & leave some comments.  Everyone loves to get a pat on the back; spread some love.

Once you make your button block, upload a pic to our Facebook group & share it !  We’d love to see it!

Scrap Quilt Challenge Sponsor Spotlight–Hummingbird Highway

Joan Ford is one busy lady!  Not only is she a national teacher and author, she publishes a weekly {awesome} newsletter and is one ambitious scrap quilter!

I first found Hummingbird Highway through the Snap Sack kits we make from her patterns.

Then I found her Cut the Scraps book.  Now there is a new Scraps Plus One, her newest book.  See that quilt-beauty on the cover?  It uses QuiltSmart pre-printed fusible web for those itty-bitty nine patches. (if you’ve been a reader of the blog for long, you know I am a QuiltSmart junkie, so it was an instant swoon for me.)

{I have the book & a bolt of the fusible.  Can you help me carve out some time?}

You can find Hummingbird Highway on all the major social networks.  Check out the home page of the website for easy links & to sign up for that awesome newsletter I was telling you about.  Plus you’ll find free goodies!

Joan is our featured designer for October, so hold on to your scrap bins!  The first week of October is sure to bring us another gorgeous scrap block tutorial!

Changes to Quilts of Valor

I have blogged a couple times this summer about donating your Challenge quilts to QOV, and have just learned of a change to the way they operate.  In the interest of providing full information, I decided to do a follow up blog post on those changes.

I attempted to find the changes on the website, but wasn’t successful.  So I dropped them an email.

In an email response to an email I sent, I received this reply from Julia Schroeder:

thank you for coming to the website to find answers. Yes, QOVF is moving toward a minimal membership fee base. But this will not take away from the veteran, it will make more funds available to cover more veterans. The $5.00 individual membership fee will help cover foundation expenses, which in turn will allow QOVF to give funds/special deals back to our membership. This is a simple explanation and I would like you to contact TN State Coordinator Dennis Taylor, at Or you may contact Judie Yates, our Director of Membership at, for a more details.

So, the skinny is that if you make a quilt with your own supplies, it will cost you $5.00 to donate it to QOVF.  I am not clear if the membership dues are annual or by each quilt submission (Update:  Per the Colorado State Coordinator, the fee is not per quilt-see her comments in the Comments below).  Personally, this does not sit well with me.  For all our Veterans have done for us, as volunteers, I personally think that the volunteer spirit should be able to thrive in an organization dedicated to paying them pack.

As you make your personal decision on supporting our military and thanking them for their sacrifices, know there are other quilting avenues to explore.  Donate directly!  Go to your VFW or American Legion & talk to the Post Commander.  Go to the VA hospital.  There is also Quilted in Honor

There are so many ways you can give back.  Research your options & go with your heart.

Scrap Quilt Challenge Sponsor Spotlight–Moda

I think that every quilter of this millennium knows about the premium quality of Moda fabric, the great online presence of the designers and the generous nature of the company.  BUT, just in case you didn’t know where to find those resources, I am going to give you a little tour-o-the Moda I love.

Many Moda designers have a great online presence.  You can find all the current Moda designers over on the Moda Blog.  Click on each designer to read more about them and get links to their recent lines.

You’ll find lots of Moda goodness on the blog.  You can find the links for all their social media channels where they are sure to use the hashtag #showmethemoda .  Remember to use that when you blog your creations from the Moda lines!  You’ll also find freebie projects there.

Speaking of freebies, I think everyone I know loves the Moda Bake Shop blog.  It is the original indie pattern outlet for using precuts.  You can search by designer (chef) or precut (bakery item).

I’m loving the most recent recipe that’s posted!  I think you could definitely go scrappy on those stars!

I mentioned earlier about the generosity of this company.  Several years ago Moda spearheaded Just One Star to coordinate the donation of quilts to our nation’s heros.  They had a goal of receiving enough blocks to make 100 quilts in 100 days.  They received over 15,000 blocks-far exceeding the number of blocks needed to create the planned 100.  In addition to this effort for our Veterans, Moda’s founder designs one-two lines each year with a portion donated to charity.  These are collectively known as Collections for a Cause.  Look for those in your LQS on your next visit!

Moda has generously donated a huge prize pack for one of our Scrap Quilt Challenge random winners.  Check it out!

We began our business with Moda and have been a loyal customer since day 1.  We never have to worry about service, quality or being uniformed.  They are a super partner to growing small shops as well as the large ones.  We are honored they have partnered with us to make the Scrap Quilt Challenge even more awesome this year!  We hope you will check out all the social media channels & #showmethemoda!

Did you miss the boat?

You missed a great opportunity last week!  We had only 15(!!) entries for the Blank Quilting Florabella fat quarter giveaway!

Congrats to Maryellen!

teachpany said... Have a blast at the show! I've used Blank fabrics, and their backings are great. I love wide backings. It's so much faster to finish a quilt, if you don't have to piece a back. I can't think of any particular quilt I've done from their fabrics, though. I do have lots of finishes on my blog, but don't recall which were Blank!

We just received some new Blank quilting fabrics including some great graphic steampunk prints.  Stay tuned as we get those online!

Scrap Quilt Challenge-Sponsor Spotlight-Craftsy

So many things compete for our time, the one thing that usually gets pushed to the back is our ME time.  I think that is what quilting is for most of us.  That ME time where I focus on something just because I enjoy it & it centers my soul.  Craftsy is the perfect partner for the busy crafter.  Classes from today’s top quilting instructions, on your electronic device, when it’s convenient for you.

In addition to classes, there are patterns, supplies, and message boards.  It is truly a community geared toward the busy crafter and indie craft designer.  You’ll find many rising stars have patterns available for you on Craftsy too.

Oh, and it’s not just quilting….you’ll find all the fiber arts, but also cooking, woodworking, painting, gardening, photography…it’s a long list.  Go see:

The fine folks at Craftsy have sponsored TWO free classes to any class they offer!  You can continue your scrap quilt adventure, or take the opportunity to try something completely new!  The choice is yours!  Two quilters will be very happy, but the decision will be so hard!  Thank you Craftsy for being a great sponsor and supporter of the craft world!

Don’t forget, the free September Scrap Quilt Challenge block tutorial from Mishka’s Playground is also available on Craftsy!

Scrap Quilt Challenge Sponsor Spotlight-Blank Quilting

We love our Blank Quilting florals and backings at Fabrics N Quilts.  I personally think the floral designs have a unique style you don’t see with other lines of fabric.  Of the backing designs we offer, the Blank designs always sell fastest.  They are a great quality, of course, but it is the design itself that sets the fabrics apart.

We just received 20 new fabrics that I can’t wait to share with you next week.  I hate to put out the teaser, but I will be heading to the AQS show in Chattanooga for the week.  Pop in & say hi!  I will be in booth #426!  You’ll see some new stuff we’ve not shown anywhere before!

Blank Quilting has donated a beautiful 3 yard backing for one of our Scrap Quilt Challenge winners.  I have used this backing & it is wonderful!

We will also continue our giveaway fun and offer a fat quarter bundle of Florabella for one of our lucky blog readers…NOW!    I am a big fan of stripes & florals together.  Of course, stripes make beautiful bindings too.  This bundle also includes a fat quarter of Rock Candy in the Honey color.  Rock candy is a fantastic shimmery fabric without the stiffness you sometimes find in metallic fabrics.

To enter for your chance to win the fat quarter bundle, you must be able to be contacted.  If you are a no-reply blogger and don’t leave an email in your comment, there’s really no need to leave an entry.  If I can’t get in touch with you to shower gifts upon you….well you get it…

Leave a comment letting me know if you’ve ever used Blank Quilting fabrics.  If you’ve blogged a project with their fabric, leave a link for a second chance!  I love me some show & tell!  Entries received by 9/12 at midnight will be counted.  We’ll post the winner by the 15th (see note above regarding travel).

iPhone case kit winner-Scrap Quilt Challenge-Quilters Dream Batting

Congrats to Cynthia!

Cynthia Brunz Designs left a comment:
Quilter's Dream has some beautiful batting. As a longarm quilter, I have used many of the blends.

I visited Cynthia’s blog today & you should too.  What beautiful creations!  You’ll love her latest scrap quilt that has a nice modern feel with the use of Ash Kona solids.  I pinned it to our Scrap Quilt Challenge Inspiration board too.

Don’t forget to join our SQC Facebook group!
