Join us for the 4th Annual Scrap Quilt Challenge

{It’s a long post…but so much goodness just can’t be wrapped up in a small package}
It’s hard to believe another year has already passed…until I look at my overflowing scrap bins!  Fabrics N Quilts is excited to help motivate you tame your scraps again this year!
As we’ve blogged in the past couple weeks, we at Fabrics N Quilts have been working hard behind the scenes to bring you a bigger better Scrap Party.  In past challenges, Fabrics N Quilts has been your sole Scrap Quilt Challenge sponsor.  This year, we asked some of our quilting partners if they could give us a hand to make the Challenge even better.  It is awesome to be in such a giving and supportive business--so much collaboration, support and encouragement.   The LQS has it from those who supply us & we in turn are energized to support & encourage YOU!  I gotta tell you, it’s a blessing to be right in the middle of this sandwich.
Scrap Block Tutorials from some of your favorite scrap quilting designers!
The following designers are making a block just for you!  Each will post a scrap block on their blog on the day noted to inspire and encourage you to get into those scraps!
Anne Wiens-July 1st
The Thrifty Quilter  made using my GO! cutter to tame my scraps a win:win.  Anne uses 6 main shapes in her blocks.  Imagine if you could have just 6 bins of scraps, all cut to size & ready to use when the urge struck!  Plus, and this is a little thing I know, it’s spiral bound. That is a special touch that makes a huge difference in actually USING a book. Since we are in a rural area, it’s not feasible to just pop over to the office supply store & have a new book rebound….unless we want to drive a couple hours.
I have also tested Anne’s blocks for Quiltmaker’s 100 blocks magazines in the past & she has a great eye for contrast & design.
Add Anne’s blog to your Reader or Bloglovin now!  Anne blogs at http://sweetgrassdesigns.wordpress.com/.    Like her page on Facebook too!
As our first designer, Anne has her scrap block ready for you today!   I am betting there is a secondary design if you don’t sash these blocks!

Nancy Mahoney-August 1st
webinar July 15 - how to make stunning scrap quilts
One of the first collections we ever stocked at Fabrics N Quilts was a 30’s inspired line designed by Nancy for P&B Textiles.  She’s been a favorite since day 1.  Her style pays tribute to quilts of the past while still keeping the designs modern and fresh for today’s home.
Looking for something to do with all the scraps you've collected in bags, baskets, and boxes? In this live web seminar, join Nancy Mahoney on her journey as a quilter and see how she has created over 50 scrap quilts. Hear how her love of vintage quilts has influenced her approach to quiltmaking. Nancy will share tips for making stunning scrap quilts and expand your knowledge of scrappy quilts.
What You'll Learn:
•How to use value in scrap quilts
•The importance of neutral colors
•How to draw inspiration from vintage quilts
•How to use fabric recipes to create scrap quilts
•A variety of scrappy styles–from traditional to reproduction to modern
Can't make the live event? Don't worry! Your registration comes with access to the archived version of the program and the materials for one year. You do not have to attend the live event to get a recording of the presentation. You will receive a copy of the recorded presentation in an email that goes out within 1 week after the live event.

Michele Foster-September 1st
Michele and I started our online quilting journey about the same time, and it has been amazing to watch her list of Quilting Bloggers grow and develop into her current multi-faceted quilting network, Quilting Gallery.  Michele has hosted several Quilt-alongs geared at the beginning to intermediate quilter with a focus on building confidence, skills and passion.  Her current QAL is Delightful Stars and beautifully modern in solids.  There is so much quilting goodness going on in Mishka’s Playground that it is hard for me to narrow my comments.  Don’t miss her free tute’s!
Joan Ford-October 1st
I was first introduced to the scrappy joy of Joan Ford by Sarah over at Confessions of a Fabric Addict.  Joan is also the author of the patterns in our ever-popular Snap Sacks kits!  Many of you have enjoyed those over the years in our giveaways!  What I found as I checked out more of her patterns is that we share the love of QuiltSmart products!  In her newest book, Scraps plus one, Joan uses QuiltSmart pre-printed interfacing to make the cutest & straightest little 9 patches you’ve ever seen.  Check out the Mini Scrap Grid How-to on her website.  {coming soon to our shop}
Joan blogs at http://scrap-therapy-quilts.blogspot.com/Like her page on Facebook too!

At the end of the challenge (October 16th) we will draw for 20 random winners!
Aurifil is our fuel here at Fabrics N Quilts.  We use the 50wt in the bobbin when we longarm quilt & it is our everyday piecing thread.  Soft, strong and not bulky in seams.  Big love for the larger spools that have 1300m (1400+ yards) because they last so long and are a great value too.  Aurifil is giving away one large and 3 small thread collections!  Oh I can hear all the happy quilters squeal with anticipation of winning one of these Aurifil collections!
Quilter’s Dream
We are #battgirls at Fabrics N Quilts!  A fave here is the Dream Orient.  Great for hand quilting as well as by machine, it has a soft hand, no needling, no bearding- just soft loveliness.  Quilter’s Dream manufactures its wonderful batting in the USA and offers a wide variety of styles and sizes of batting.  I love the Super Queen, as sometimes a queen batting is just a little to narrow and a king creates so much scrap.  All Quilter’s Dream battings are available in Crib, Craft, Twin, Full, Queen, Super Queen & King.
Another plus of Quilter’s Dream to check out is their involvement with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) charities.  Check that out here: http://hopesanddreams.quiltersdreambatting.com/home.html
Quilter’s dream is giving away 4 packages of batting to Scrap Quilt Challenge participants!
Blank Quilting
We love Blank Quilting backing fabrics and share that passion with our customers!  Fusion Illusion is a beautiful swirl in a bevy of available colors.  Blank Quilting is generously giving away a 3-yard bundle of this beautiful blue 108” wide backing which they call Navy, though we tend to think of it as more a Cobalt.  It is a beautiful fabric that we have used on numerous quilts.  Blank Quilting offers beautiful floral collections as well as some fun ones for the kiddos, precut strip rolls, and a beautiful tonal metallic shimmer fabric, Rock Candy.  You can find many Blank Quilting collections at Fabrics N Quilts.  We also love the HUGE selection of free patterns on their website (107!)  What a great place to go find some SQChallenge inspiration now!
Hummingbird Highway/Scrap Therapy
Toss Across Kit
The newest pattern from Scrap Therapy has just been given a name by readers of Joan Ford’s blog.  Meet Toss Across!  Joan is giving this generous Toss Across kit away to one of our winners.  Includes a 5” square Hoffman Batiks pack, aptly named Hummingbird, a pack of the Mini Scrap Grid interfacing & the Toss Across pattern.  I can’t tell you how anxious I am to play with this mini scrap grid interfacing!  Joan’s cover quilt from her new book uses it & it’s just jaw dropping.  Check out Scraps plus One.

Craftsy has grown into a grand community of crafters and a great source for those who want quilting classes on their own terms, time, and speed.  It is also a great way for new designers to branch out & reach quilters with downloadable patterns or  video classes.  We love anything that inspires quilters to sew!  I think the hardest about Craftsy is deciding!  Just like going to the quilt shop, right?  Craftsy is giving away 2 free online classes!  It will be the winner’s choice on which class to indulge, but there are a couple on scrap quilting!  Pop over to Craftsy now & window shop the classes you’d choose.
Mishka’s Playground
Michele from Mishka’s Playground,  is giving away 2 copies of her awesome Aiming for Accuracy quilt pattern booklet.  It’s more than a pattern, it’s a guide book for honing your technique to make better quilts.  Step up your quilting to the next level with the Aiming for Accuracy Booklet. This booklet contains:
  • 17 comprehensive lessons, with full color photos, to complete the quilt top.
  • Recommended products and tips for improving quilting accuracy.
  • Tutorials for creating half-square, quarter-square and split quarter-square triangles.
  • Finishing up ideas including choosing batting, basting, quilting and binding.
  • Blank color charts to assist in planning the quilt.
  • Links to various tutorials, resources and videos for further information.
Moda has been one of the most wonderful companies for small Local Quilt Shops.  Being a bit off the beaten path has never stopped the area rep from visiting and they are always just a call or email away when I need help.  I know how much quilters love Moda fabric & the cutting edge of the designers’ collections.  Moda also promotes the indie designers with the Moda Bake Shop & we love that commitment to the home studio stitcher.  We are so honored to have them as part of our challenge!  One lucky quilter will win this great gift pack from Moda: drawstring tote, 2 patterns, book, and this beautiful roll of Zen Chic’s Barcelona fabrics, plus some notions goodies!
The GO! Baby is a revolutionary fabric cutter from AccuQuilt designed to help you cut fabric up to 90% faster than traditional cutting methods. The GO! Baby is perfect for scraps - allowing you to turn your scrap stash into the perfect pieces for quilting in minutes rather than hours.  As I have mentioned before, we tame our scrap bin with the GO! cutter.  Sometimes a day organizing the stash is all you need to find your creative spirit.  AccuQuilt is giving away a GO! Baby fabric cutter to one very lucky quilter!
Creative Grids Rulers

CGRMT6 creative grids scrap crazy 6 in
Creative Grids and Checker Distributors are giving away 2 “Scrap Crazy 6” ruler sets!   Create 6" finished blocks with the four templates in this set. All of the pieces can be cut from those odd sized scraps in your stash or stack fabrics and cut multiples in a matter of minutes. The tips are trimmed when needed so the pieces sew together perfectly every time. Then, embellish the seams with your favorite decorative stitches and threads. Make an entire quilt or sew them into a scrappy, decorative border.

Scrap Quilt Challenge Details:
For those of you that joined in the fun the last 3 years, the challenge is very similar!
  • 45” x 60” minimum size
  • Entries must be completed quilts (patchwork, applique, rag quilt are all fine.  It just must be a completed project)
  • Entries should have been completed in the last year (since last year’s challenge ended on October 15, 2013)
Scrap quilts are historically a way to use up the smallest scraps & strips of fabrics from other projects. Quilters would put every string of fabric to use, in those times when there was no room for waste.
Even in our times, we all have a scrap bin that overflows or a collection of fat quarters stashed away longing for a project. There are no design limitations on your challenge piece, other than overall size and that the quilt should utilize scraps of fabric in an obvious way/be the focus of your quilt, and the quilt must be finished (quilted and ready to be used).

So gather up your scraps & start designing your masterpiece!

Quilt pictures must be uploaded to our Flickr group by October 15, 2014. https://www.flickr.com/groups/sqc4/
